Training maps – sprint

The maps below may be downloaded and used for individual or group training.

Esplanade, Palmerston North – enter Palmerston North from the south-east, past Massey University. Approximately 600 m after crossing the Manawatu River turn left on Park Road. Turn into the Esplanade Gardens by the Aquatic Centre and park in the carpark adjacent to the model railway station. There are toilets and cafe are on site.

Bason Reserve, Wanganui – signposted from SH3 just west of Wanganui at Rapanui Road. Bason Botanical Gardens is an area of landscaped gardens with lakes. Toilets on site, but no cafe!

Massey University, Palmerston Northon weekdays this map should only be used outside the hours of 0800-1700. The only public parking is a small parking area (Bledisloe Park) which can be accessed on the left when driving south from Palmerston North on Tennent Drive. This is directly opposite the entrance to the Fitzherbert Science Park. The training on this map consists of 4 sprint intervals using the complex array of buildings.

Virginia Lake, Wanganui – Virginia Lake is on the right hand side as you leave Wanganui on SH3. The map is parkland and surrounding streets with a large lake (Virginia Lake) at its centre. Toilets and cafe on site.

Training maps – forest

Foxtangi Dunes, Foxton Beach – From SH1 at Foxton turn west towards Foxton Beach. After about 1.5 km turn right on to Palmer Road, which becomes Cousins Avenue. Park in the public car park at the end of Cousins Road. If the weather is hot, Foxton Beach is a great place for a post-run swim. Foxtangi is a mixed area of high, rough-open dunes and mature pine forest, with some areas of low visibility. There are multiple MTB tracks in the forest which come and go with regularity. The course is based on a club event held in September 2023.

Hydrabad, Waitarere Beach – From SH1 take the Waitarere Beach turning approximately 8 km north of Levin. In Waitarere Beach turn take the 4th left (Park Avenue) and travel to the end of the road. Park adjacent to the small gate leading into the forest. Hydrabad is generally mature pine forest although there has been recent thinning and felling, some of which has not been updated on the map. There are a lot of old logging trails which are also not shown on the map, but some of which are still quite distinct. The area has seen a significant rise in the water table over the last few years which has led to a lot of “temporary” marshes being mapped.
